When you surf Internet what you are normally allocated is an dynamic IP address.

The IP address for your router is changed each time when you connect to your ISP. If you want to run a local server ( i.e. Web server ) and invite your friends or visitors to browse. Even you used to give these remote user your IP address. However, for the next moment, they can't find you because of the dynamic IP address changes again.

You can use various free services on the Internet which offer a Dynamic DNS service. Once registered, you have a name such as DrayTek.dyndns.org. It is mapped to your current IP address. So remote users/computers can get to your network via the address. You don't have to memorize the IP address. Just type DrayTek.dyndns.org, the remote users can find you.
